Jervis Bay

After saying goodbye to the Irelands, we headed south to the seaside town of Jervis Bay. With Easter in full swing, finding a site big enough for Lenny turned into a bit of a mission, but a mildly panicked afternoon of phone calls later, we secured a riverside park in Nowra - about 35 minutes outside of Jervis.

The now “freezing” temperatures of 18°C were starting to get to us (we’ve clearly gone soft), and with both of us still recovering from a lingering cold making its way around the country, we decided that this stop was as good as any to recharge, catch up on laundry, and fix our car headlights (exciting stuff!).

The main draw of Jervis Bay is its bioluminescent algae, which lights up the shoreline creating scenes akin to life on Pandora. Raring to witness this natural phenomenon, we headed into town, grabbed a pizza from Club Jervis, and made our way to the beach, ready for the show.

And it was… disappointing.

No magical algae. Just the two of us standing silently on a dark beach...

Narooma

Next stop: Narooma - but not before a crucial detour to Hayden’s Pies, highly recommended by Brett and Simone. Easter called for a proper feast, but with Naomis sudden & unwelcome gluten intolerance, and Jacks sheer refusal to remove fun from his life, we struck a compromise: one gluten-free pie… and one full-sized family pie (serves four), both filled with chunky steak, mushroom and gravy.

After an hour of not-so-patiently watching them bake through the oven door, it was finally time. Add in a couple of glasses of chilled red from Hunter Valley, and Easter dinner was served. Naomi had a delicious, balanced meal. While Jack - displaying an uncharacteristically big appetite (not) - polished off an entire four-person pie, solo. And a happy Easter was had by all!

Then came the highlight of the trip so far: a boat trip out to Montague Island.

Snorkelling in crystal-clear water alongside a colony of seals easily takes the crown as our favourite experience yet. Known as the “puppies of the sea,” they fully lived up to the name - playful, agile, and completely intrigued by our presence.

Along the island’s coastline, we were treated to an incredible underwater world: giant rays, shimmering schools of fish moving in perfect formation, and even a rare sighting of a wobbegong shark gliding along the ocean floor.

An unforgettable day, and without a doubt the highlight of the East Coast. And no, Jack didn’t sink, despite being full of pie.
